Magnificent Castles and where to find them

On Europe Day with the 2017 EUROPA Stamp Competition

After a one year break, PostEurop is proud to announce the return of the "Most Beautiful EUROPA Stamp" competition for this year and launch the public online voting competition on Europe Day.  This year's EUROPA theme "Castles" takes us through a more than a century old journey throughout Europe's most iconic castles.

Addressing one of the historically and culturally richest aspects of the European heritage, this year's EUROPA competition theme, promises to take us all through an enriching journey that will present, some of the most notable and iconic castles that to this day are still standing throughout Europe. Once seen as symbols of power, defence, war and supremacy over other kingdoms, it is extremely positive to see these monuments survive the sociological and political evolutions to have a much more peaceful and beautiful connotation at present times. Today these castles are preserved as monuments that do not only teach us about our own past history, but they can also demonstrate how we no longer need fortified walls in Europe, in order to live in safety.

In these modern times, castles continue to fuel our imagination bringing us constantly, countless fantasies, constructions by the seashore and beautiful love stories that can make us dream of a better and warmer world. It is based on this creative concept that philatelic designers delved into this theme, to create their interpretations.

"After a successful joint design in 2016 that led to a one-year break in this online competition, it is exceptionally nice to welcome this year's EUROPA with such a beautiful theme. Castles not only represent a major part of the European history and heritage but they are also well carved into some of the most beautiful landscapes throughout Europe. Thus, I am also very pleased to see that the many different entries that we have received this year managed to perfectly combine these aspects, in order to create beautiful stamp designs." Anita Hägblomm, Chair of the PostEurop Stamps and Philately working group from Posten Ǻland.
