The Green Postal Day, celebrated on September 19th, marks the global postal cooperation around sustainability.
As key players in the transport and logistics sector, postal operators fight climate change and promote more sustainable practices internationally. This day highlights the initiatives and progress made by postal services to achieve their goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
On the occasion of the sixth edition of Green Postal Day, global postal operators announced a reduction of their overall annual CO2 emissions by nearly 40% since 2008. They are committed to achieving an additional reduction of 50% by 2030, relative to their 2019 carbon emissions.
In addition to this joint commitment, the Posts aim to reach other sustainable goals by 2030:
Using 75% energy from renewable sources in corporate buildings;
A fleet of vehicles comprising at least 50% alternative fuel vehicles, including at least 25% electric vehicles;
50% sustainable packaging;
75% diversion of waste from landfill to recycling or reuse.
Global Cooperation for the Climate
This initiative underscores the importance of international collaboration and knowledge sharing to address current environmental challenges. By working together, postal services worldwide hope not only to minimize their own ecological impact but also to encourage communities and individuals to adopt more sustainable practices.
“The climate issue is global. And if we are faced with a question, a global problem, we should be able to have a global response. Each postal service could do something, but only a global action will be effective.”
